Paralysis
You awaken in the middle of the night...
Or at least, that's what you think...
Paralysis is a short game of roughly 460 words written for Neo-Twiny Jam 2024. It depicts my personal experience with sleep paralysis.
Fullscreen is recommended.
Content warnings:
- Depiction of someone experiencing sleep paralysis and panicking.
- The game is text-based and does not contain any sounds or jumpscares.
- The panic is conveyed through the text, the use of text animations, and periods of darkness where you are unable to do anything.

This was made in TWINE? The text animations were used very well in conveying the subtle terror of the inability do much of anything. Something about the not-quite black colour of the background creates a sense of being muffled/trapped. As an aside, I think it would be nice if there was some indication that we won't need to click to advance the story, as I mistakenly thought was the case in some sections :)
Thank you for your comment!
Twine can be a very malleable tool if you know a bit of CSS. You could probably achieve the same result (and do it more efficiently) with a VN engine like Ren'Py, but I didn't have time to learn a new coding language 😅
Fun fact, the near-black colour of the background is actually eigengrau, the colour you reportedly see when you close your eyes!
I've edited the description to indicate that you sometimes can't do anything (thank you for telling me), though I think the desperate attempts to advance the story add to the feeling of helplessness.
